From double-flowered varieties like Pink Cashmere Mix to the variegated Parrot Mix, you’ll quickly recognize how diverse a genus Tulipa really is. The easy-to-grow fall bulbs are a classic garden flower for many reasons—they’re easy to grow, dependable bloomers, and absolutely gorgeous!

A prized cut flower and landscaping plant, tulips are among the first flowers to bloom in spring, and each bulb pours all its energy into one exquisitely gorgeous flower. Once cut, tulips will last for about five days in the vase.

Planting tulip bulbs is an easy and fun project—especially for kids. Plant tulips in the fall, several weeks before your area’s first fall frost. While tulips can be planted in very early spring—around the first of the year—the bulbs prefer to be planted in early fall. Otherwise, you’ll need to chill your bulbs for three months prior to planting.

First, choose a planting site with well-draining, fertile soil. A good rule of thumb is to plant tulip bulbs pointy side up, twice as deep as the bulbs are tall.

Place each tulip bulb in its own individual hole, or plant them in groups for a stunning visual effect! To grow tulips as a border or in a garden row, dig a trench at least eight inches deep and place tulips closely together until they resemble eggs in a carton. Cover the bulbs with soil and water them in to break dormancy.

One of the few flowers that are equally at home in full sun or partial shade, gardeners have options when planting tulips. Full sun is generally preferred, but growers in hotter climates might have better results planting tulips in an area where the plants will receive some protection from the scorching afternoon sun. Enjoy your tulip flowers in the garden or in the vase, but flowers left on the plant will eventually need to be cut back to allow the bulb to store energy for future seasons. Top your tulips about three weeks after blooming, or when the flowers have begun to fade. Cut or break the flowers at the base of the bloom, leaving the foliage and stem behind. As counterintuitive as it feels, doing so will allow the same tulip bulbs to bloom for three to five more years.
